Sonam Wangchuk Requests Earth Structure Books in Jail, Plans Experiments with Jodhpur Clay

Jodhpur, Rajasthan – Renowned environmentalist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) at Jodhpur Central Jail, has requested books on earth structures to conduct research and experiments using Jodhpuri clay from within the prison.

His wife, Dr. Geetanjali J. Angmo, shared this update via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that Wangchuk intends to use his time in jail productively by exploring sustainable architecture techniques. She confirmed that she plans to deliver the books to him during the next court hearing scheduled for October 29.

This isn’t the first time Wangchuk has requested educational materials from jail. Ahead of the October 15 hearing, he had asked for a children’s encyclopedia, reflecting his continued focus on education and knowledge-sharing even while incarcerated.

Wangchuk was arrested on September 24 from Leh following unrest in the region. Authorities later transferred him to Jodhpur, Rajasthan. His detention came in the wake of a hunger strike he initiated, demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which grants special protections to tribal regions.

The administration has alleged that Wangchuk was involved in inciting local youth during protests, leading to his detention under the NSA—a law typically reserved for cases involving threats to national security.
