New Delhi: Amid protests over voter verification and allegations of vote tampering, the government on Monday passed the New Income Tax Bill (No. 2) 2025 and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, the Goa Assembly ST Reservation Bill was introduced, along with two sports-related bills and three bills concerning Manipur.
The opposition continued its uproar during the proceedings. Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of subverting democratic norms, stating, “We are told discussions cannot be held because the House is not in order, yet bills are being passed. This is a betrayal of democracy. Democracy must be protected. The Chair and the Leader of the House must clarify—what kind of democracy is this?”
Earlier in the day, around 300 opposition MPs marched from Parliament to the Election Commission’s office in protest against voter verification measures. Senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav were detained during the demonstration but were released after two hours.
