Landslide on Vaishno Devi Route Leaves One Dead, Six Injured; Fears of More Trapped Under Debris

Katra/Jammu: The ongoing pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi was marred by a tragic incident on Monday morning, as a massive landslide struck the Banganga area amid relentless heavy rainfall. The landslide occurred around 8:30 AM near the Gulshan Langar site, injuring at least six pilgrims and causing the death of one, with fears that more may be trapped under the debris.

According to eyewitness accounts, the landslide sent large boulders and debris crashing down, severely damaging tin sheds and blocking the pathway used by devotees. Among the injured are two local residents. The incident also completely destroyed a major prepaid service counter operated by M-Tech Company, which facilitated horse, palanquin, and porter services along the pilgrimage route.

Rescue operations were launched swiftly by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, local administration, police, CRPF, and disaster response teams. However, persistent heavy rains are hindering relief efforts and causing traffic disruptions.

Banganga Route Closed for Pilgrims

In the wake of the incident, the Banganga route has been closed for public movement. Devotees are currently being directed to continue their pilgrimage via the alternative New Tarakote route. Meanwhile, due to heavy rainfall since last night, the important battery car route to the shrine was also shut down around midnight, as loose stones and mudslides have made the path unsafe.

At present, pilgrims are proceeding along the New Tarakote path to reach the traditional route near Ardhkuwari. Helicopter and battery car services remain suspended due to adverse weather conditions.

Authorities, including the Shrine Board and local officials, are closely monitoring the situation. Rescue teams remain on high alert, as there is concern that more people may still be trapped under the rubble. So far, one fatality and six injuries have been confirmed.
