New Delhi: Five Pakistani nationals have been arrested by the Indian Coast Guard and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) with drugs worth an estimated ₹3,000 crore. The accused were allegedly travelling on an Iranian boat and were carrying 526 kg of methamphetamine and heroin, which they were reportedly transporting to Mumbai through the sea route.
The security forces carried out the operation near Lakshadweep on September 25, although details of the seizure and arrests emerged on Wednesday.
Intelligence Input Led to Operation
Following an intelligence alert, the Indian Coast Guard conducted surveillance using both maritime and aerial assets. A suspicious boat was intercepted west of Lakshadweep, after which security personnel carried out a detailed search.
During the operation, the authorities allegedly recovered 526 kg of methamphetamine and heroin and arrested five Pakistani nationals who were on board the vessel.
The boat, its crew and the seized narcotics have been brought to Mumbai under security arrangements. The accused are being questioned, and further legal action is expected to follow.
Similar Drug Seizure in April 2025
This is not the first major drug seizure involving the Gujarat ATS and the Indian Coast Guard.
In April 2025, the agencies seized around 311 kg of methamphetamine near the Gujarat coast. The consignment was estimated to be worth approximately ₹1,800 crore and was allegedly being transported from Pakistan’s Pasni Port to Tamil Nadu.
According to officials, the smugglers dumped the drugs into the sea after spotting the security forces and fled towards Pakistan’s maritime boundary.
Focus on International Maritime Drug Trafficking
The latest operation highlights the continued efforts by Indian security agencies to prevent international drug trafficking through maritime routes.
Officials said the coordinated operation based on intelligence inputs and surveillance helped intercept the suspected consignment before it could reach its intended destination. Further investigation will focus on the accused, the source of the drugs and the network involved in the alleged smuggling operation.
