Jammu/Katra: The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage has been suspended for the third consecutive day following a massive landslide near Ardhkuwari on the pilgrimage route. The landslide, which occurred on the afternoon of August 26 near the Indraprastha Bhojanalaya due to heavy rainfall, has claimed 34 lives. Over 20 others are currently undergoing treatment for injuries.
In the aftermath of the incident, many pilgrims remain stranded. While some have taken shelter in hotels in Katra, they await further updates on the resumption of the yatra. Authorities have issued a red alert in the region, and rescue operations are ongoing.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has taken full responsibility for transporting the deceased to their respective hometowns. Identities of 24 victims have been confirmed. The Board has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased, while the Disaster Management Department will provide an additional ₹4 lakh.
In a gesture of support, the Katra Hotel Association has stepped forward to offer free accommodation to stranded pilgrims and those affected by the disaster. Association President Rakesh Wazir stated that hotels will provide shelter to those in need for a period of 2 to 4 days at no cost.
