Jammu: A major push toward rural infrastructure development in Jammu & Kashmir was marked by a high-profile event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre, where a substantial road connectivity package under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Phase IV was formally handed over.
At the gathering, attended by senior officials, engineers, and representatives from across the Union Territory, Shivraj Singh Chouhan presented a package valued at ₹3,566 crore under PMGSY-IV (Batch II). The initiative is aimed at significantly improving rural road connectivity, a key factor in socio-economic development in remote and underserved areas.
Speaking at the event, the Union Minister emphasized the central government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in far-flung regions where connectivity remains a challenge. He highlighted that improved roads not only facilitate transportation but also enhance access to healthcare, education, and markets, ultimately uplifting the quality of life for rural populations.
The recipient leadership from Jammu & Kashmir assured that work on the ambitious package will begin shortly, signaling swift implementation. Gratitude was expressed toward the Union Minister for his continued support and proactive role in advancing infrastructure projects in the region.
According to official details, the package will connect 363 habitations through the construction and upgradation of 330 roads, spanning approximately 1,600 kilometres. This extensive network is expected to bridge connectivity gaps, especially in difficult terrains, and bring long-term economic benefits by enabling smoother movement of goods and services.
Experts note that such large-scale infrastructure investments can have a multiplier effect—boosting employment during the construction phase while also fostering sustained economic growth by integrating remote areas into broader development frameworks.
The PMGSY-IV initiative builds upon earlier phases of the scheme, which have already transformed rural connectivity across India. In Jammu & Kashmir, where geographical challenges often hinder infrastructure development, this latest package is being viewed as a transformative step toward inclusive and equitable regional progress.
The event concluded with renewed commitment from both central and local authorities to ensure timely execution, transparency, and quality in project delivery, setting the stage for a new chapter in rural connectivity across Jammu & Kashmir.
