New Delhi, August 2, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi today emphatically declared that India will purchase and trade only those goods that are made with the hard work and dedication of Indian citizens, subtly responding to escalating trade tensions with the United States.
During a public address in Varanasi, Modi underlined the importance of self-reliance — emphasizing ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Make in India’ — and urged citizens and businesses alike to prioritize indigenous products, especially during festivals and weddings. “Everything used in the household must be Swadeshi, made with Indian sweat,” he affirmed
His remarks come against the backdrop of the U.S. imposing 25% tariffs on Indian exports, prompting alarming trade headwinds. The Indian government responded sharply, declaring certain sectors—like agriculture and dairy—non-negotiable and off-limits for foreign market access. Modi further reinforced this stance by highlighting that any force undermining India’s interests would face strong repercussions .
In recent days, India has also accelerated negotiations with the U.S. and is evaluating a range of options to counterbalance the tariff impact. These include proposals to reduce import duties across sectors and increase purchases of U.S. oil, gas, and defence equipment. PM Modi called for a national pledge to support Swadeshi goods, especially during key economic activities and festivals
