Jammu: Police on Saturday prevented a proposed march by the Congress party towards the Lok Sabha in Jammu and Kashmir and detained several party leaders, including AICC General Secretary Syed Naseer Hussain and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President Tariq Hameed Karra.
Officials said the action was taken when hundreds of Congress workers gathered at Maharaja Hari Singh Park and attempted to march towards the Lok Sabha as part of the party’s ongoing “Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq” campaign. The protest was aimed at demanding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and raising concerns under the “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram.”
Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that several party leaders were detained near Jewel Chowk. Those taken into custody included Hussain (MP), Karra, AICC General Secretary and CLP leader G.A. Mir, Working President Raman Bhalla, and AICC Secretary and Punjab MLA Pargat Singh.
Condemning the police action, Sharma stated that the Congress had planned a peaceful march to the Lok Sabha to highlight public welfare issues. However, the protesters were detained, placed in police vehicles, and taken to the District Police Lines.
