Orange Alert Issued in Jammu & Kashmir; IMD Predicts Rain and Snowfall Across the Region

Srinagar, October 6 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of light to moderate snowfall in higher reaches and rain in the plains. This marks the season’s first snowfall in several high-altitude areas, while plains including Srinagar experienced overnight rainfall.

According to the IMD, widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected across the region, particularly over the Kashmir Valley, Chenab Valley, and the Pir Panjal mountain range. The department has advised farmers to suspend all agricultural activities on October 6 and 7, citing potential risks due to inclement weather.

“There is a likelihood of landslides and falling rocks in vulnerable areas. Light to moderate snowfall is expected in higher reaches of Kashmir, Chenab Valley, and Pir Panjal. Moderate to heavy snowfall may occur in some elevated parts of south Kashmir and the Chenab Valley,” the IMD said in its advisory.

Rain, Snow, and Strong Winds Expected

The weather department has also forecast generally overcast conditions across the Union Territory, with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in most parts. Higher altitudes are likely to receive light to moderate snowfall, continuing through the afternoon before conditions begin to improve.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated locations in the Jammu region, while moderate to heavy showers are expected in some parts of Kashmir.

Short-Term and Extended Forecast

The IMD expects the weather system to subside gradually after October 7, with only light rain possible at a few locations on October 8. From October 9 to 16, weather across Jammu and Kashmir is expected to remain generally dry.

Earlier today, several high-altitude areas including Gulmarg, Sinthan Top, Sadhna Pass, and Razdan Top recorded the season’s first snowfall. Meanwhile, the plains, including Srinagar, witnessed rainfall beginning late last night, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures.

Residents and travelers are advised to remain cautious, especially in landslide-prone areas, and to stay updated with official weather bulletins.
