Jammu and Kashmir Police to Use AI to Strengthen Security, Combat Terrorism

In a major initiative to eradicate terrorism and strengthen the security apparatus in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Police is set to integrate advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools into its intelligence and security framework. The move aims to enhance internal security, reinforce border-area surveillance, and counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism more effectively.

Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat said that in view of changing circumstances and future requirements, adopting AI-based security systems has become essential. He stated that in the near future, the Jammu and Kashmir Police will have a robust AI-driven security system, being developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu.

The DGP said the decision to adopt an AI-based security framework was taken following a recent high-level meeting held in Raipur under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting was attended by Directors General of Police, Inspectors General, and senior officials from security agencies across all states and Union Territories.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Jammu for the establishment of an AI Security Grid. The proposed AI-based system will assist the police in operational decision-making by analyzing large volumes of data related to forensics, investigations, and crime prevention.

Blind Dependence on Machines Can Be Harmful

Highlighting the capabilities and limitations of AI, DGP Nalin Prabhat cautioned against complete reliance on technology. He said that while modern technology should be used as a support system, blind dependence on machines can be harmful. Emphasizing the importance of human intelligence, he said the human intelligence network must be continuously strengthened alongside technological advancements.

He further noted that the effectiveness of an AI system depends on the accuracy and quality of the data used to develop it. Machines, he said, cannot replace human thinking or decision-making abilities. “Machines can assist, but they should never dictate,” he added.

A Secure India Is the Foundation of India@2047

The DGP said that with changing times, strategies for maintaining law and order, tackling crime, and combating terrorism must also evolve. While the importance of AI cannot be ignored, it should be used to enhance the capabilities of security forces.

He emphasized that the police must remain masters and operators of technology, not just its users. Stressing the vision of India@2047, he said that a strong and efficient security system is essential to make India a developed nation by 2047. “A secure India is the foundation of India@2047,” he said.
