Srinagar, July 28, 2025 – An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Srinagar on Monday during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra 2025. According to official sources, the Indian Army launched a counter-terror operation, codenamed ‘Operation Mahadev’, to neutralize militants suspected to be hiding in the region.

Initial intelligence inputs suggested the presence of two to three terrorists in the Lidwas area of Harwan, Srinagar. The Army has now reported the killing of two terrorists in the ongoing operation. The entire area has been cordoned off, and an intensive search operation is currently underway.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed that a gunfight had erupted in Lidwas and that the operation was active.

Officials further stated that a joint team comprising personnel from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon and search operation in the forested Mulnar area near Mahadev peak. As the security forces closed in on the suspected location, the hiding militants opened fire, prompting retaliatory action.

Senior officers from the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police have reached the site to oversee the operation. Preliminary reports indicate that the terrorists belong to the banned outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The encounter is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
