Jammu, India – September 10, 2025:
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh strongly condemned the detention of party MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), calling it an undemocratic and unconstitutional move by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Singh arrived in Jammu on Wednesday, along with AAP’s J&K in-charge and former Delhi minister Imran Hussain, to assess the situation and hold discussions with party workers.
Speaking to the media, Sanjay Singh said, “Our MLA Mehraj Malik was demanding a hospital for the people. In return, he was slapped with the PSA. What kind of law is this? You cannot treat an elected representative like a terrorist. This is not just unconstitutional—this is a direct assault on democracy.”
Singh further alleged that the BJP-led government is systematically targeting AAP leaders for raising issues concerning public welfare.
“You jailed Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and even myself. Now you’ve arrested Mehraj Malik. This is outright dictatorship. We will not stay silent; we will fight this battle politically and legally.”
Background: Controversy Over Demand for Medical Facility: Mehraj Malik, AAP’s only MLA in Jammu and Kashmir, was reportedly booked under the PSA following a controversy surrounding a demand for a medical center in Doda and alleged derogatory remarks against the Deputy Commissioner of the district. The Doda district administration has since imposed restrictions on public gatherings, citing concerns over law and order. An official order from the Additional District Magistrate prohibits the assembly of more than four people in the area.
Singh said the AAP will continue to fight for issues like hospitals and schools, regardless of government pushback:
“The government doesn’t want to engage in dialogue on education or healthcare. Instead, they respond with FIRs, arrests, and threats. This is not governance—this is tyranny.”
The party is expected to announce its next course of action in the coming days, after consultations with local leaders and supporters.
