New Delhi : On the final day of the Monsoon Session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla issued a stern rebuke to opposition parties, urging all political leaders to exercise restraint in their conduct. Addressing the House, Birla expressed concern over repeated disruptions and a lack of decorum during parliamentary proceedings, stating that “the nation is watching how important discussions are being obstructed.”
He emphasized that both inside and outside Parliament, the language and behavior of elected representatives must remain dignified and in line with democratic values. Criticizing the opposition’s conduct, Birla remarked that their actions during the session did not uphold the standards of parliamentary decorum.
Providing statistics to highlight the impact of the disruptions, the Speaker said that out of 419 questions listed, only 55 received oral responses. Although 120 hours were allocated for discussions, only 37 hours could be utilized effectively. Despite the disturbances, 12 bills were passed during the session.
Earlier on Thursday, proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned shortly after they began at 11 a.m., only to resume at noon. During the resumed session, Speaker Birla voiced regret over the persistent attempts to disrupt the functioning of the House throughout the session.
The Monsoon Session, which began on July 21, saw continuous interruptions led by the opposition, who demanded a debate on the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. Concluding his address, Birla adjourned the House sine die.
